Karina

1945 Salzburg
Born.
1965 Vienna
Moved to Vienna, where I worked as a window dresser among other things.
1972 Florida
First time in Florida, where I took a job as au pair for an elderly couple. The woman in a wheelchair with impassive face and whisper, gradually I learned to reach her as a person.
1973 Den Bosch
Moved to Den Bosch to study at the art academy.
1979 Amsterdam
Moved to Amsterdam, where I worked for a publishing company as a book designer.
1981 Amsterdam
I started working as a freelancer: book design, drawings, writing my own texts, photography.
1972 Amsterdam
Teaching typography among other skills (in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, India, USA). Sharing my experiences and encouraging personal development, creativity, and conscious citizenship remains a valuable addition to my own practice as an artist and human being.
1991 Amsterdam
Began living in the Transvaalbuurt. I've never lived in the same place for so many years.
2010–2014 Amsterdam
Turned an old classroom into my studio. Here I made installations, could realize large works, and participate in neighborhood art projects (with exhibitions in Amsterdam, Munich, Utrecht and Mumbai).
2005–2015 Amsterdam
For the past ten years I've been accomplishing my dream of long ago: learning the Arabic language.

About
Ondergronds

Ondergronds is named for those exceptional conversations below the surface.

While travelling through Amsterdam on a daily basis, we pass by hundreds of strangers and rarely get a chance to connect. Ondergronds allows you to have a real conversation with one of those strangers – perhaps the connection will last, perhaps it may inspire other conversations on your daily travels.

About the team:

Julien Thomas developed urban interventions and creative civic engagement strategies in Vancouver, and graduated from the Sandberg Instituut in 2016.

Webdesign: Fabian Hijlkema

Photography: Coco Plooijer

Ondergronds is an initiative of the Knowledge Mile Coalition, a community of knowledge institutions, companies, organisations and residents working together along the Wibautstraat and Wesperstraat from Amstelplein to Nieuwmarkt.
